BMW's X3M/X4M intake, although clumsy at first glance, is a very well-designed system given the space available. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and doesn't change direction as abruptly as with typical OEM airbox designs. Rather than a complete redesign, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We developed replacement filters made of non-woven fabric that have a much higher flow rate compared to the paper filters. To reduce air intake temperatures and force air into the airbox, we designed large front scoops that sit behind the grilles. The carbon scoops direct air into the ducts and effectively insulate the intake side of the airbox. The final piece is the carbon airbox cover, which, while it doesn't increase power, allows for a more audible intake sound and provides a much-needed aesthetic upgrade to the engine bay.
